Oil-free Soft Wire Wool

Gilboy's
Oil-free Soft Wire Wool

Premium Beeswax Furniture Polish

£3.95

We have found that this '0000' oil-free soft wire/steel wool applies the wax very evenly and easily to the surface of the wood. The wool is very soft to touch and when used with even pressure will allow you to achieve a very professional antique finish. Not only will it apply the wax correctly but it will also remove any surface dirt and dust at the same time, this in turn, in many cases removes the need to clean the surface prior to waxing (as seen in our videos)

It is also very effective when applying wax to turned legs and feet, allowing the wax to reach in and clean old wax and dirt out whilst applying it at the same time.

We also sometimes use this wire/steel wool to dull a surface prior to waxing and again to dull the finish to a satin finish after waxing. This gives a wonderful satin-waxed look and feel to the finish. It also feels fantastic to touch.

How to apply on flat surfaces..
When using on flat surfaces always apply the wire wool with an open flat hand with even pressure, also ensure when applying again on flat surfaces to move your hand in a straight a line as possible otherwise your arm will naturally arc at the ends creating the same arc in the finish. Please be aware that wire wool is a light abrasive and will leave very very fine scratches on the surface of the finish. We have found that this ‘oil free’ wire / steel wool applies the wax very evenly and easily to the surface of the wood.

Supplied in x1 120cm Length

Having found the power of Gilboys gold this wire wool is the way I was advised by Gilboys to apply it. The effect is astounding and I am so happy to have professional quality and now the knowledge, generously shared, to achieve a professional finish to my furniture at home. Thanks Gilboys

Dear Catherine. Thank you for your very kind review. When I was apprenticed in the mid 80's I was told by my mentor to always keep the secrets of polishing close to my chest. I think this so very wrong, The more people can learn and do it for themselves, is for the better. Many thanks once again. Simon Gilboy

Oil-free Soft Wire Wool

Thank you for your score. It's hard to leave a review on wire wool but it's the same 'oil free' soft wire wool we use here in the workshop. When I started my apprenticeship in 1987 I was taught to use soft wire wool and it's still the very best way to apply the polish. *(apart from very highly polished dining tables) It also can be used to remove any excess polish if you've applied too much **Another use for it is: To gently dull a surface after polishing - 1) Shape a 15 / 20 cm section of the wire wool to a flat pad sized shape 2) With a little pressure to the buffed waxed surface, follow the grain in straight lines (with no wax on it) and you will just take the high reflection off of the polish leaving a satin sheen. If you want it to shine again just buff it with the polishing cloth :-) Thank you Simon Gilboy

Amazing fantastic easy to use just great

Hi Simon I used the polish bought Sunday very pleased, I have been a furniture dealer for 47 years have never had anything so easy or quick to show good results, used polish on a very dry bleached 19th century oak coffer lid, left for one hour buffed colour nearly fully restored and a lovely finish with just one coat, two will be back to original. Saved time which is money. well done you make my job so much easier
Unbeatable I will now use in my antique centre would like to stock when your ready

Dear Alex. Thank you for your very flattering review. We have dedicated 100's of hours of workshop time developing and refining our polish. We set the bar so high we were not sure we could achieve it with a wax polish. although I think we may have :-). Only two weeks ago did we receive the newly designed boxes for the polish and also the 1 litre tins are now available to order online. I hope you are continuing to have success with our unique polish. Kindest Regards. Simon Gilboy.

HOW TO POLISH WITH BEESWAX

  1. Use a soft cloth or very fine 0000 wire wool
  2. With gentle pressure spread the polish evenly over the surface in the direction of the grain, being careful not to over apply and avoid any upholstered areas. Once applied the surface area should look matt in appearance
  3. Allow the pure pine turpentine to completely evaporate and the wax to harden
  4. Use a soft buffing cloth to buff the wax to a deep and lustrous shine

Weekly furniture maintenance of removing dust can be done by simply using a slightly damp cloth and drying if needed with a clean dry cloth - beeswax polish will protect the surface for a very long time.

If you have a larger surface like the side of a chest of drawers or the top of a dining table apply the beeswax more evenly by dabbing the surface all over with small amounts of polish then wipe in the direction of the grain to spread the wax evenly.

*Secret Trade Tip:

For carved relief areas such as an antique coffer, you can also apply beeswax furniture polish with a standard shoe polish brush. It makes applying the beeswax much easier and allows the polish to get right into those dusty and hard to reach areas. Buff it the next day with the soft shoe brush.
